Necchi Campiglio Villa in Milan was constructed between 1932 and 1935 by the Milanese architect Piero Portaluppi. The extraordinary and astonishing Villa with architecture, decorative arts, furnishings and collections express a harmonious whole that has survived completely intact, both outside with its ample yard, tennis court and pool, and inside with its rich succession of rooms. At the same time, the fervor of daily activity is adequately witnessed by the service areas of the house, the pantry, the kitchens and bathrooms, all still graced with their original facilities.
I Am Love – Io sono l’amore – is a 2009 Italian film directed by Luca Guadagnino shot in Villa Necchi Campiglio that follows an haute bourgeoisie family through changing times and fortunes, and its disruption by the forces of passion.I Am Love tracks that metamorphosis with surging, insistent music by John Adams and a lush visual style that could be called postclassical Hollywood baroque.
With its close-ups of gorgeous cooking inspired by the cuisine of Carlo Cracco, the owner of the legendary Cracco Peck restaurant in Milan, one scene has to be singled out in which the main character dines on glazed prawns; a moment of “prawn-ography”. Guadagnino calls food “a tool to express the utter giving that a lover can display to the other without words.”
